How to: Decorate Your Home for Beginners

How to: Decorate Your Home for Beginners

Want to decorate your home but have no idea where to start? Here are 5 steps to help you get going!

1.) Find your Style

Finding your preferred decor style is the most important step because it allows you to easily find cohesive decorations that make sense for your home. Without an understanding, it is very easy to throw any type of decoration, whether it is for your coffee table, walls, or mantle, into your home, which will make certain things look out of place and awkward.

You can simply avoid all of this by finding your style and utilizing it.

2.) Make a Plan

Next, you need to make a plan.

Are you completely redecorating your home or room or do you just want to change the decor a little bit?

It is easy to get overwhelmed without creating a plan first, so sit down, figure out what you are wanting for each of your rooms or your whole home and plan out the way you want each room to look!

You can do this in many different ways. The main way I normally do this is to create a collage or vision board with different types of furniture or decoration in one document to show me what I want the room to look like.

3.) Choose a Color Palette

A color palette is another super important part of decorating for a similar reason to finding your style.

Having a cohesive color palette is just as important as having a cohesive style. It cuts the randomness out of your room as well as makes everything look put-together and clean.

You can do this by going to your local hardware store and getting the free, physical paint samples they offer. Having all the colors together allows you to easily see if you like them or prefer to add or take away a color.

The rule of thumb for choosing a palette is to find colors that complement each by having a primary color, a secondary color, and an accent color, but having more than three colors is totally acceptable as it is your home.

4.) Choose your Essential Pieces

Finding your main pieces of furniture such as your couch, bed frame, coffee table, etc. is essential to do first.

This is because it is the furniture that is most permanent in your home, so you want to find ones that you love and fit your style.

The rest of the decorations are easily worked in around the main pieces. They can be changed in and out for seasonal purposes or even just to refresh your decorations.

5.) Slowly bring Life to your Home

DO NOT buy all your decorations at once!

As frustrating as it can be, it is best to not buy all of your decorations at once. Usually if you do this, you will end up hating something because you rushed into buying it rather than waiting for something that you truly love for your space.

Decorating is a process and just like any other, it takes time to get to the end result, so be patient and have fun doing it!
